In a fiery series of posts on Truth Social, President-elect Donald J. Trump delivered a strong warning to the Panamanian government, accusing them of imposing “exorbitant fees” on U.S. usage of the Panama Canal. Trump hinted that if the “rip-off” does not stop, the U.S. might consider taking back control of the strategic waterway.
Trump’s Warning on the Panama Canal
Trump emphasized that the Panama Canal is of critical importance to U.S. national security and international commerce. In his posts, he condemned the high costs the U.S. faces for using the canal, declaring that the era of America being exploited on the global stage would end under his leadership.
“The Panama Canal is one of the Wonders of the Modern World, and it’s a vital trade route for our economy and military. We will NOT be ripped off by unfair fees anymore!” Trump wrote.
The Panama Canal, completed in 1914, serves as a crucial shortcut for global maritime trade, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, Trump expressed concern that these fees are disproportionately harming American interests, especially as tensions rise with China, which has expanded its influence in the region.

Blame on Past Leadership
Trump didn’t stop at criticizing Panama. He also took aim at former President Jimmy Carter, who in 1977 signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, which transferred control of the canal to Panama by the end of 1999. Trump argued that this decision was a “historic mistake” that weakened America’s strategic position.
“Jimmy Carter gave away one of the greatest engineering achievements in history, built with American blood, sweat, and lives,” Trump stated.
He pointed out the high human cost of the canal’s construction, referencing the thousands of workers who lost their lives to disease and harsh conditions in the mosquito-infested jungles of Panama.
Rising Concerns Over China’s Influence
Trump’s posts also hinted at concerns about Chinese involvement in the region. He warned that the canal must not fall into “the wrong hands,” a veiled reference to China’s growing economic investments and political ties with Panama.
China has been strengthening its presence in Central America, raising fears that it could gain undue influence over the Panama Canal, which is essential for global shipping and U.S. naval operations.
A Return to U.S. Control?
In his posts, Trump suggested that a return to U.S. control of the canal could be on the table if the Panamanian government continues its current policies.
“We built it, we paid for it, and we won’t let it be used as a tool against us,” Trump declared.
While the idea of reclaiming the canal may seem drastic, Trump’s comments reflect his broader “America First” foreign policy, which prioritizes U.S. sovereignty and economic interests.

Public Reaction and Political Implications
Trump’s statements have sparked widespread debate on social media and among political commentators. Supporters praise his bold stance, viewing it as a necessary defense of U.S. interests in a time of growing global competition. Critics, however, argue that revisiting control of the Panama Canal could strain international relations and destabilize the region.
Looking Ahead
As Trump prepares to take office as the 47th President, his remarks about the Panama Canal signal a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy. The canal, a symbol of American ingenuity and sacrifice, could once again become a focal point in the global power struggle between the U.S. and China.
