Trump Faces Backlash for Targeting GOP Rep. Thomas Massie Over Spending Bill Standoff

Former President Donald Trump is receiving significant pushback after declaring his intention to support a primary challenge against Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) over the congressman’s stance on the latest stopgap funding bill.

Trump Calls for Massie’s Ouster

In response to Massie’s firm opposition to the government funding bill, Trump took to Truth Social, where he criticized the Kentucky Republican and pledged to ensure his removal.

“Congressman Thomas Massie, of beautiful Kentucky, is an automatic ‘NO’ vote on just about everything, despite the fact that he has always voted for Continuing Resolutions in the past. HE SHOULD BE PRIMARIED, and I will lead the charge against him.”

Trump did not stop there, adding:

“He’s just another GRANDSTANDER, who’s too much trouble, and not worth the fight. He reminds me of Liz Cheney before her historic, record-breaking fall (loss!).”

However, the reaction from Trump’s own supporters has been anything but unified, with many voicing strong disagreement over the former president’s attack on Massie.

Conservatives Defend Massie Against Trump’s Criticism

While Trump has historically held immense sway over the Republican Party, his decision to go after Massie has triggered sharp responses from conservatives and libertarians who see the Kentucky lawmaker as one of the few voices standing against reckless government spending.

Social media erupted with thousands of comments from Trump’s supporters, many of whom praised Massie for being one of the few Republicans committed to fiscal responsibility.

“Massie is one of the best we have in Congress. This is a mistake, Mr. President,” one user commented on Truth Social.

“Attacking Massie makes zero sense. He’s not a RINO, he’s a principled conservative. What’s the goal here?” another critic wrote.

Massie’s Opposition to the Stopgap Bill

Massie has remained firm in his position, arguing that the short-term spending bill does nothing to address excessive federal spending. He noted that the bill keeps funding at current levels without implementing necessary budget cuts—a stance that has won him respect from small-government advocates.

“I will not vote for a bill that continues wasteful spending and fails to address the real financial crisis facing our country,” Massie declared on X (formerly Twitter).

Trump’s GOP Influence Tested

This public clash within the Republican Party comes at a time when Trump is trying to solidify his influence ahead of the 2024 election. While his endorsements have historically shaped GOP primaries, his opposition to Massie could test his standing among libertarian-leaning conservatives.

What This Means for the GOP:

  • Trump’s influence remains strong, but attacking a popular fiscal conservative may alienate parts of his base.
  • Massie’s resistance to the spending bill aligns with small-government conservatives, many of whom oppose reckless federal spending.
  • The GOP faces growing internal divisions over balancing Trump’s leadership and traditional conservative principles.

As this political showdown unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Trump’s push to unseat Massie will gain traction—or backfire among his supporters.
