A Georgia state Senate committee is launching an investigation into Stacey Abrams, scrutinizing her connections to the New Georgia Project and a $2 billion federal grant awarded to an environmental group she was previously involved with.
Abrams’ Connection to the New Georgia Project Under Fire
The probe comes after the New Georgia Project—a voter registration nonprofit founded by Abrams—agreed to pay a $300,000 fine to the State Ethics Commission for alleged campaign finance violations. The violations included:
Failing to register as an independent committee
Not disclosing $4.2 million in donations
Failing to report $3.2 million in expenditures
Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and other Republican leaders say these findings demand further scrutiny, particularly regarding potential illegal coordination between the group and Abrams’ 2018 gubernatorial campaign.

Republicans Push for Deeper Inquiry
Republican lawmakers have also raised concerns over a $2 billion grant issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Power Forward Communities, a coalition focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Abrams worked with Rewiring America, one of the organizations in the coalition, until late 2024.
“Don’t you think that deserves looking into? Because I do,” Jones said Friday, following the introduction of a Senate resolution authorizing the investigation.
The resolution will examine whether current campaign finance and nonprofit laws need reform to prevent future violations.
Abrams: “A Political Attack”
Abrams, a former Georgia House minority leader and two-time gubernatorial candidate, dismissed the investigation as a political stunt aimed at discrediting her influence.
“Georgia Republicans are so terrified of the power of the people, they’re lashing out with unfounded attacks and baseless investigations that waste taxpayer dollars,” Abrams said in a statement.
She also defended her record, stating:
“I proudly led work to lower energy costs in Georgia’s poorest regions.”
“I registered and turned out thousands of voters to strengthen democracy.”
A Rising Democratic Star Under Scrutiny
Abrams gained national recognition for her voting rights advocacy, particularly in expanding Georgia’s electorate. Her efforts after her narrow 2018 loss to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp catapulted her to national prominence, even landing her on Joe Biden’s shortlist for vice president in 2020.
However, her 2022 rematch with Kemp ended in a wider defeat, raising questions about her future political ambitions.
EPA Grant Controversy: Did Abrams Benefit?
The Senate probe will also examine whether Abrams’ past role at Rewiring America influenced the EPA’s decision to award the massive $2 billion grant.
The EPA grant was intended for energy-efficient housing projects nationwide.
Abrams served as senior counsel for Rewiring America from March 2023 to late 2024.
Critics claim the funding allocation raises ethical concerns, though fact-checkers dispute allegations of fraud.
A PolitiFact investigation published by the Poynter Institute debunked social media claims that Abrams was involved in fraud related to the grant.

What’s Next for the Investigation?
The special Senate committee will now review:
The New Georgia Project’s campaign finance violations
Possible coordination between the nonprofit and Abrams’ 2018 campaign
The $2 billion EPA grant and its ties to Abrams
Republican lawmakers argue that public trust in election integrity and government transparency is at stake. Meanwhile, Abrams and her allies insist this is just another attempt to discredit her political career.
