In the wake of a devastating midair collision over Washington, D.C., Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has taken swift and decisive action to enhance aviation safety. Following the tragic accident involving American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, the FAA has issued new restrictions on helicopter traffic near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
Duffy, working in coordination with President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, announced the immediate enforcement of restricted airspace zones, aiming to prevent further aviation disasters.

“With the support of @POTUS and in consultation with [Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth], effective today, the @FAANews will restrict helicopter traffic around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport,” Duffy stated.
“This decision will immediately enhance safety for both airplane and helicopter operations. It is part of the Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) ongoing commitment to protecting our airspace and ensuring the highest standards of aviation safety,” he added.

New Flight Restrictions: What Areas Are Affected?
The FAA’s newly restricted airspace extends across several critical areas in Washington, D.C., to prevent future collisions and ensure smoother air traffic control. According to Duffy, the restricted zones include:
- Memorial Bridge to South Capitol Street Bridge (excluding the Tidal Basin)
- Haines Point to Wilson Bridge
- All airspace directly above Reagan National Airport
These changes will significantly reduce air congestion and eliminate risks of helicopter-airplane conflicts near one of the nation’s busiest air hubs.
