Comedian and actor Michael Rapaport stirred up a heated online exchange after offering to fund a trip for outgoing representatives Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO) to the West Bank, following their controversial pro-Palestinian rhetoric. The offer, wrapped in sharp criticism, came as the lawmakers faced the end of their congressional terms after losing their primaries.

The Provocation
In a fiery reaction to a clip of Bowman’s House floor speech, where he passionately stated, “There’s more to come. Free Palestine, free the Bronx, and free all marginalized people,” Rapaport responded with a proposal aimed at calling their stance into question.
“Since @JamaalBowmanNY and @CoriBush are now jobless and sooooo interested in and fascinated by Gaza,” he tweeted, “I’m offering to fly them to ISRAEL and have an SUV drop them off in RAMALLAH. Seven days in Judea and Samaria on me. I’ll even throw in $150 a day for expenses. You guys down?”
Polarizing Reactions
Rapaport’s comments quickly drew backlash and support online. Critics accused him of being dismissive and inflammatory, while supporters saw his remarks as a challenge to the lawmakers’ perceived lack of understanding of the situation in the Middle East.
A response from Bowman branded Rapaport as a “culture vulture” and accused him of failing to grasp the complexities of the region. “We let him in and he represents nothing that Hip Hop stands for. A clown of epic proportions,” Bowman fired back. He also added that he had been to Ramallah and Hebron and suggested Rapaport educate himself by taking trips with organizations like Breaking the Silence.
Context of the Controversy
Both Bowman and Bush have been vocal advocates for Palestinian rights, often aligning themselves with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Their calls to “Free Palestine” and criticism of U.S. support for Israel have sparked heated debates, particularly during times of heightened conflict in the region.
As both lawmakers prepare to exit Congress after losing their primary elections, their stance on Israel-Palestine relations has remained a focal point of their rhetoric. However, their comments have drawn sharp criticism from centrists and conservatives, who accuse them of supporting rhetoric that some view as anti-Israel.
Rapaport’s Outspoken Persona
Known for his blunt commentary on political and social issues, Rapaport frequently uses his platform to challenge views he finds objectionable. His remarks about Bowman and Bush fit his established pattern of direct, often controversial critiques.
