Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, a key ally of President Joe Biden, has revealed that he urged the President’s staff to consider issuing a “preemptive pardon” for former President Donald Trump. This bold suggestion comes amid growing discussions about unity and moving past political turmoil as Trump’s influence continues to dominate headlines.
Clyburn, credited with reviving Biden’s 2020 campaign with his pivotal endorsement during the South Carolina primary, shared his thoughts during an appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill.” While he has not directly spoken with Biden about this, he confirmed discussing the idea with members of the President’s team.

“I think we need to clear the air in this country,” Clyburn said. “We’re trying to run a government on behalf of all the people in this country, and if we spend all our energy going after Trump or Trump going after [former Rep.] Liz Cheney, [Special Counsel] Jack Smith, or Dr. [Anthony] Fauci, that’s not what we should focus on.”
The Case for Preemptive Pardons
Clyburn’s suggestion extends beyond Trump. He has advocated for “preemptive pardons” for other politically polarizing figures, including Liz Cheney and Dr. Anthony Fauci, arguing that such gestures could help “remove distractions” from the nation’s political agenda.
This recommendation follows Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, a move that has already sparked significant debate. Now, with political divisions continuing to widen, Clyburn sees pardons as a potential step toward national reconciliation.
Why Pardon Trump?
The proposal to pardon Trump has stirred mixed reactions. Supporters of the idea argue that it would defuse tensions and shift the national focus toward pressing issues such as the economy, healthcare, and international relations.
Clyburn explained his reasoning:
“We need to take these issues off the table. Donald Trump will seize any opportunity for recognition or victory. If we give him that chance now, we can prevent endless political battles in the future,” he stated.
Biden’s Team Responds
According to Clyburn, Biden’s staff listened carefully to his proposal and promised to relay it to the President. While there has been no formal response yet, the mere suggestion highlights the growing debate among Democrats about how to handle Trump’s enduring influence on American politics.
Echoes Across the Political Spectrum
Clyburn’s remarks align with sentiments shared by prominent voices across the media landscape. Hosts of the liberal podcast Pod Save America and media personalities such as Chris Cuomo and Stephen A. Smith have also floated the idea of pardoning Trump to shift the political narrative.
During an interview with Cuomo, Smith emphasized the importance of moving forward:
“The Democrats lost. It’s time to stop chasing Trump. More than a dozen cases have been dropped against him, and he’ll likely win appeals in others. It’s time to let it go,” Smith remarked.

Balancing Justice and Unity
Critics of a Trump pardon argue that it sets a dangerous precedent, potentially undermining accountability for public officials. However, proponents believe the move would signal a desire for unity and a break from the cycle of political retribution that has dominated Washington.
As the Biden administration considers its next steps, the debate over pardoning Trump highlights a broader question: can the United States truly move forward without addressing the deep divisions that have defined recent years?
