The political future of New York City Mayor Eric Adams is under intense scrutiny as Governor Kathy Hochul and Rev. Al Sharpton convened with top Democratic leaders to discuss his potential removal.
With corruption scandals shaking New York politics, Mayor Adams has faced allegations leading to discussions about his fate. His recent alignment with President Donald Trump on border security has further fueled tensions within the party. U.S. District Judge Dale Ho is set to review the Department of Justice’s decision to drop bribery charges against Adams, adding another layer of complexity.

At a private meeting held at Hochul’s New York City office, attendees included City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, City Comptroller Brad Lander, Representative Gregory Meeks, and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.
Al Sharpton addressed the press, stating, “We’re waiting for the judge’s decision before making any moves. It would be premature to act before then.”
He also criticized Adams’s recent Fox News appearance alongside border czar Tom Homan, highlighting concerns over Adams’s stance on immigration enforcement.
How Could Adams Be Removed?
If Hochul chooses to act, Adams could either face formal misconduct charges or be ousted through a special panel composed of city officials. However, some argue that the Democratic primary in June should determine his fate instead.
Political Fallout and Resignations
Amid the controversy, U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon resigned over the decision to drop charges, and four of Adams’s top deputy mayors also announced their departure.
Meanwhile, bipartisan voices are opposing a swift removal. Former Governor David Paterson (D) said, “Let the voters decide.” Similarly, NY Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs pointed out that due process would take time.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) accused Hochul of political motivation, stating, “She is rushing to remove him because he is working with the Trump administration to remove dangerous criminals.”

Adams Responds
Mayor Adams has remained mostly silent on the controversy, only speaking publicly to update the status of a New York Police Department detective who was shot. When pressed about his recent media absence, Adams responded bluntly: “‘Cause y’all liars.”
