A heated controversy has erupted within the Republican ranks as Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) openly criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his remarks on Ukraine’s NATO membership. Wicker, who has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, went as far as comparing Hegseth’s statements to something Tucker Carlson would say, igniting a fresh debate on U.S. foreign policy.
Hegseth’s Comments Spark Republican Backlash
During a speech at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels, Hegseth cast doubt on the likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO as part of a future peace agreement.
“I do not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement,” Hegseth stated, further describing the return to pre-war borders as an “illusionary goal.”
His remarks triggered an immediate response from Senator Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who accused Hegseth of compromising negotiations before they even began.

Wicker Slams Hegseth, Calls His Move a ‘Rookie Mistake’
Speaking to Politico at the Munich Security Conference, Wicker didn’t hold back his criticism.
“Hegseth is going to be a great defense secretary, even though he wasn’t my choice for the job,” Wicker said. “But he made a rookie mistake in Brussels, and while he’s walked back some of what he said, that one line still stands.”
Wicker’s criticism intensified when he suggested that Hegseth’s comments mirrored the views of Tucker Carlson, a well-known critic of U.S. intervention in Ukraine.
“I don’t know who wrote that speech—but it’s the kind of thing Tucker Carlson could have written, and Carlson is a fool,” Wicker asserted.
Concerns Over U.S. Strategy in Ukraine
The controversy raises serious concerns over how the Biden administration—and by extension, its officials—are approaching the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Wicker stressed that publicly revealing negotiating positions weakens Ukraine’s stance against Russian aggression.
“There are good guys and bad guys in this war, and the Russians are the bad guys,” Wicker declared. “They invaded, contrary to almost every international law, and they should be defeated.”
He further emphasized that Ukraine deserves the support and commitments made to them by the international community.
