Former CNN anchor Jim Acosta is once again making headlines, this time by urging major media outlets to boycott the Trump administration following the White House’s recent ban on the Associated Press (AP). The controversy stems from the AP’s refusal to adopt the administration’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, instead choosing to continue using its long-standing title.
Acosta, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, took to his Substack platform to decry what he calls an assault on press freedom, warning that caving to Trump’s demands would set a dangerous precedent for journalism in America.

Acosta’s Rallying Cry for Media Unity
In his post, Acosta argued that this latest move is not just about media access but a broader attempt by Trump to control the narrative.
“Don’t be fooled by pundits who dismiss this as inside-the-Beltway squabbling. This is a crucial test for the free press in the U.S.,” Acosta wrote. “The AP made the right decision by standing firm, refusing to let the White House dictate how it reports the news.”
He compared the AP’s current battle to his own past experience when his press credentials were revoked during Trump’s first term. According to Acosta, both incidents reflect a systematic effort by the administration to intimidate journalists and manipulate media coverage.
Proposed Boycott Against Trump
In a bold move, Acosta suggested that major news outlets should consider taking legal action and boycotting Trump’s events until the AP’s press privileges are reinstated.
“The AP should challenge this blatant attack in court. Other news organizations must rally behind them, offering public support, writing op-eds, and if necessary, refusing to cover White House events in solidarity,” he stated.
Acosta insisted that journalists must take a stand, emphasizing that the press—not the president—determines how news is reported.
“The presidential Sharpie is not mightier than the pen,” he concluded.
