The move comes after Trump issued a memorandum titled “Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court”, directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to scrutinize law firms that allegedly use litigation to undermine the federal government.

According to a DOJ spokesperson, the department has already begun evaluating the activities of legal professionals who have reportedly misused the court system for political gains. Trump’s directive specifically names Democratic election lawyer Mark Elias, who played a key role in funding the controversial Steele dossier, which falsely alleged collusion between Trump and Russia during the 2016 election. In response, Elias announced on LinkedIn that his firm, Elias Law Group, is expanding, vowing to resist Trump’s crackdown on legal activism.
Additionally, Elias is affiliated with Democracy Forward, an organization actively challenging Trump’s executive actions. Democracy Forward CEO Skye Perryman accused Trump of trying to suppress the legal profession, asserting that the DOJ’s actions were designed to instill fear rather than uphold justice.
