Colombian President Orders Sale of U.S. Oil Assets in Push for Green Energy

President Gustavo Petro has ordered the sale of all state-run oil assets within the United States as part of his commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels.

During a high-level cabinet meeting, Petro declared that Ecopetrol, the country’s largest oil company, should not contribute to environmental destruction. The decision impacts joint operations between Ecopetrol and Occidental Petroleum, which were expected to produce 90,000 barrels of oil per day through fracking—a process Petro staunchly opposes.

“I want that operation to be sold, and for the money to be invested in clean energies,” Petro stated. “Fracking is the death of nature, and the death of humanity.”

The announcement comes amid growing tensions between Colombia and the United States, particularly following President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policies. Trump’s administration has been enforcing mass deportations, returning thousands of illegal immigrants to Colombia despite Petro’s initial resistance.

Previously, Petro criticized Trump’s actions on X, writing, “I don’t like your oil, Trump. You’re going to wipe out the human species because of greed.” He also referenced his admiration for American intellectuals like Noam Chomsky and Walt Whitman while condemning the influence of fascism in both the U.S. and Colombia.

While Petro insists his decision aligns with Colombia’s long-term sustainability goals, economic analysts warn that the move could weaken the nation’s energy sector. The oil industry remains one of Colombia’s top revenue sources, and divesting from U.S. energy markets may have unintended financial consequences.

The Colombian leader’s green energy push marks a dramatic shift in the nation’s economic policies. However, critics argue that his anti-fossil fuel stance could harm Colombia’s financial stability—particularly if renewable energy initiatives fail to generate comparable revenue.

With this latest order, Petro continues to position himself as a global climate advocate, but only time will tell how Colombia’s economy will handle the fallout from abandoning key U.S. oil assets.
