Chris Wallace recently shook up the political conversation with a revelation that could have drastically altered the 2024 presidential race. During a live segment on CNN, Wallace pulled back the curtain on internal discussions within the Democratic Party that, just six months ago, involved serious consideration of removing Vice President Kamala Harris from President Joe Biden’s re-election ticket.
Wallace’s candid disclosure came during a discussion about the ongoing Democratic National Convention (DNC), which he described as “going fine” on its third night. However, the veteran journalist didn’t shy away from addressing the elephant in the room—the lingering doubts about Harris’s role on the ticket, which had plagued the party earlier this year.
“To be ruthlessly honest about it,” Wallace began, “six months ago, there were a lot of delegates and Democratic officials who were thinking, ‘Hmm, maybe we could drop Kamala Harris and have someone else as a backup to Joe Biden.'” His words cut through the carefully maintained image of party unity, revealing the behind-the-scenes uncertainty that many had suspected but few had confirmed.

The Context of Harris’s Struggles
This revelation comes on the heels of Kamala Harris’s historically low approval ratings, which plummeted to a mere 36.3% in November 2023. This dismal figure seemingly fueled discussions within Democratic circles about potential alternatives to Harris, as the party grappled with the challenges of a highly competitive 2024 election cycle.
Wallace went on to describe the current DNC as “odd,” noting that Harris has only been the official nominee for about a month. “Usually, a convention is the end of a process,” Wallace explained. “They’ve gone through a whole six months, a year of a presidential campaign—New Hampshire, Iowa, all the primaries. This one is the beginning of a process, in a sense.”
The CNN host also pointed out what he perceives as a lack of genuine connection between Harris and the Democratic base. Drawing an analogy to a new relationship, Wallace said, “It feels more like a romance where you’re in the first month that’s very intoxicating, you really like the person, but you haven’t fallen in love yet.”
Internal Party Divisions and AOC’s Criticism
This sentiment was echoed by New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), who, as reported by the Daily Caller, had initially criticized the swift backing of Harris. In a July livestream, AOC stated, “If you think that there is consensus among people who want Joe Biden to step down, that they will support Vice President Harris, you would be mistaken.”
She continued, “A lot of them are not just interested in removing the president. They are interested in removing the whole ticket.”
The controversy surrounding Harris’s place on the ticket reached a boiling point after Biden’s widely criticized debate performance against Republican contender Donald Trump in June. With Harris’s approval rating hovering at just 39.5% in March, Democrats found themselves divided on whether to fully embrace her as Biden’s potential successor.

The Democratic Party’s Unified Front
Despite these earlier reservations, the Democratic Party has now rallied behind Harris as their nominee for the upcoming presidential election. Even AOC has since thrown her support behind the Vice President, following Biden’s decision to step down from the race.
As the DNC continues, all eyes are on Harris to see if she can overcome the lingering doubts and unite the party behind her candidacy. With less than 90 days until Election Day, the stakes are higher than ever for both Harris and the Democratic Party as a whole.
Harris’s ability to connect with voters, solidify her position, and address the pressing concerns of the electorate will be crucial in determining the outcome of the 2024 election. The coming weeks will be pivotal as Harris seeks to prove that she can lead the Democratic ticket to victory and ensure the party’s success in one of the most consequential elections in recent history.
